Head of Education, Teacher
The goal of teaching should be to excite students about learning and to help them to use education to make their dreams a reality. At Wayne Geri Academy, we foster critical and creative thinking in our students and encourage them to be inquisitive, intelligent, and productive members of their communities. Building this school has been one of the smartest decisions of my life. How many people have the privilege of waking up every morning to go do a job they love? After five years of teaching at a variety of other schools, it has been absolutely fabulous to spend my time teaching at a school where I know that the students' learning is the priority and there is no bureaucracy or standardized testing to hold that back.
Robert Kohler
Founder, Teacher
I believe that learning requires interest, apparent application and challenge. Too often, school lacks all three of these aspects. After teaching in the private sector for five years and working in the public sector for two, I have seen again and again that successful students are those that are interested in learning. I can't make every kid interested in quantum physics, though if any are interested I would be happy to teach it. At WGA though, I have the freedom to find the subjects a student is interested in and then mold instruction to those interests, thereby creating a scenario for success both at this level and the next.
Chris Orsburn
Teacher
One of the things that excites me most about teaching is when a student finds a topic they are interested in and begins asking questions and discovering answers that they could have never even thought of before. My goal in teaching is to inspire more of these questions by finding what the students are interested in and sending them off an educational expedition. Working at WGA has given me the opportunity to focus more on what will interest and benefit the students rather than merely ensuring that all of the California History/Social Science Content Standards are met, regardless of comprehension. I believe this is a great advantage to all parties involved, because as humans we tend to focus and take with us what we are interested in rather than what is forced upon us.
